About Wegovy

What is Wegovy?

Wegovy is a prescription-only weekly injection used to support long-term weight management in adults and adolescents. It contains semaglutide, a medicine that mimics a natural hormone (GLP-1) that helps regulate appetite, food intake, and body weight.

Who is Wegovy for?

Wegovy is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for:

Adults:

  • With a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or more (obesity), or
  • With a BMI of 27 or more and at least one weight-related health issue such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or sleep apnoea.

Adolescents (12 years and over):

  • With obesity (BMI ≥ 95th percentile for age and sex)
  • And a body weight over 60 kg.
How does Wegovy work?

Wegovy helps you feel full earlier and stay full longer, reducing your hunger and food cravings. This makes it easier to eat less and lose weight.

It also helps improve health markers such as:

  • Blood sugar levels
  • Blood pressure
  • Cholesterol levels

In people with cardiovascular disease and a BMI ≥ 27, Wegovy also reduces the risk of heart attack, stroke, or death from cardiovascular causes.

How do you use Wegovy?
  • One injection once a week, at any time of day, with or without food.
  • Inject under the skin in the thigh, stomach, or upper arm.
  • Dose increases gradually over 16 weeks to reduce side effects:
    • Week 1–4: 0.25 mg
    • Week 5–8: 0.5 mg
    • Week 9–12: 1.0 mg
    • Week 13–16: 1.7 mg
    • Week 17+: 2.4 mg (maintenance)

If side effects occur, your doctor may slow or pause the dose increases.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much weight can I expect to lose?

Clinical trials showed an average weight loss of 15% over 68 weeks in adults — results may vary.

Is Wegovy a type of insulin?

No. It is not insulin. It is a GLP-1 receptor agonist, which helps regulate appetite and blood sugar.

Can I take it long term?

Yes, as long as it’s effective and well tolerated. It should be part of a long-term weight management plan.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose within 5 days. If more than 5 days pass, skip that dose and take the next one as scheduled.
